The following comparison uses data collated by Josef Pohm, displayed using the system that I created to report my brief test results. One need only compare the tables to note that Josef has performed a great deal more testing, which is why I have persuaded him to let me publish his work. All subsequent text is Josef's.

The Goal

The primary objective is to compare a large variety of lossless audio codecs.

The comparison includes alternate versions, obsolete codecs, and general purpose compressors with audio specific optimisations. The comparison does not currently include older versions of codecs, but this may change in the future.

NB: Some timings may not be completely accurate, but these will be replaced over time.

Processor CPU Intel Celeron (Tualatin) 1.2GHz @ 1.56GHz

Hard Drive Two hard drives are used, one for reading and one for writing, to double I/O bandwidth

NB: Celeron Tualatin are basically enhanced PIII. I usually repeat tests on a PIV 2.8GHz-HT, and a 2600+ Sempron. The hierarchy of codec speed performances will obviously vary on different systems. I'm currently considering a method to highlight this phenomenon.

Test Corpus

The test corpus consists of the same sample set I use to discover possible weaknesses with codecs. The sample set is therefore geared toward testing these weaknesses, while also representing a well balanced corpus to correctly evaluate a compressor's performance.

Following careful evaluation I have managed to limit my samples to only nine files, totaling forty six minutes. However, I am currently considering a change, extracting a small portion (fifteen seconds) which is still able to show the same behaviour of the full sample. This would reduce the size of the sample corpus to no more then three or four minutes.

The main weakness of the test corpus is not being able to recognise worsening compression effectiveness with higher, or lower, than average loudness samples. This is very evident when testing one particular codec. Also, higher loudness samples are not well represented; however I intend to resolve this by introducing some further samples.
